Chad Otterstrom, 1st year of Academy Snowboard Camps at Wild Mountain, MN.

In 2002 I borrowed a camera from a friends dad. I was using it to help me get into a Academy Snowboard Camp at Wild Mountain, MN, for free. I figured if I could offer Matt Peterson something useful he may just let me hang out. The camera made the most sense and I didn't even know how to use the thing. It was Canon Rebel, I believe the first of its type. What I didn't know and didn't expect what was about to happen at that camp... I went to go learn more about snowboarding, and I left knowing a lot more about photography.

I didn't put that camera down the entire time I was at camp. It stuck to me. The last day of the camp I was sitting on the side of the park talking with Matt telling him how excited I was about the photos I was getting. I think I told him I had a hundred great shots and that he should use them for Academy Snowboards. He put a grown up perspective into my life and told me that if I even had two "good" shots I was a good photographer. I didn't fully understand what he had just told me until many years later...

It was my pursuit to become a professional snowboarder when I went to that camp, instead I came out as a photographer.

Since 2001 I have endlessly documented Action Sports. For thirteen plus years it was my bread and butter. Today it has grown out to be a bit more. I photograph product, shorebreak, surf, skate, snow, weddings, portraits, places, things...  I photograph life as it happens.

My work experience includes:

Five of the six images were my photographs from the 2012 season. Bald-e-Gal's "The Convoy" was one of my favorite years with Krister Ralles putting up a major video part. It was a blast to document that winter.

Bald-e-Gal Productions: They produce snowboard films each season based on Minnesota Snowboarding. My work with them has included seasons of photographing the team riders and producing content for DVD covers as well as posters, blog posters, web content, and even publishings.

Corn. Corn. Corn. Welcome to the Midwest. This was shot a few miles from my childhood home in MN. I grew up in the midst of corn. Thankfully Pete Harvieux is a big fan of midwest art and he ran this as a two page spread in Corduroy Lifestyles Issue 1.5.

Corduroy Lifestyles: Pete Harvioux's publishing's are the hype of the midwest, Corduroy Lifestyle Magazine features the Midwest's up and coming. Whether you are a Skater, Snowboarder, Photographer, or even Videographer, getting a mention in this small publishing felt good and usually led to more opportunity. Pete was a big supporter of mine and he featured a lot of my work.

I'll never forget handing one of these issues to Trevor Graves showing him my featured photography. He grabbed a pen out of his pocket and asked me to sign a shot he picked out to be his favorite. That was a huge moment for me as he has been a major inspiration not only in my own work, but also in the work of most modern action sport photographers.

Transworld Team Shoot Out at Big bear, CA with the Rome Snowboard Team.

I acted as Scott Serfas' assistant for the 2011 Transworld Team Shoot Out at Big Bear, CA.

Scott's images combined with the very talented Rome Snowboard Team and of course the help of Big Bear Park Crew took first place that year. Scott Serfas landed another cover of rider LNP, I assisted with the flash setup. I'm standing next to Scott, second in on the left.

My first full ad featured in Eastern Surf Mag by Fox Surf.

Shooting with Caroline is really a privilege. At the age of 13 she's a top competitor in Women's Pro Surfing. It's amazing to see a young talent like her charge and surf so well.

My FIRST COVER! Who wouldn't be stoked? I have heard photographers such as Scott Serfas describe a covershot as the holy grail of photography, I would have to agree especially after holding onto my own.

The shot is of Matt Meola taken at Ho'Okipa on Maui, Hawaii. FreeSurf Hawai'i's Surf Mag, Issue #6, Summer 2015.

Cool Story behind this cover. I had owned my first water-housing for about a month before taking this image. I do have an extensive knowledge in photography which helped me get the functions set right away with water photography, but in all reality I was a total newby at shooting in the water when I got this shot. One thing I really had going for me was a determination to shoot this evening. Watching Matt, Kai, and Albee shred so hard definitely made me focus on the task at hand. A cover shot was landed!

These day you can find me shooting surf in Florida, but I travel. Water Photography has become my passion and I have a string desire to keep it as my source of income so that I can continue to pursue capturing fantastic moments in these athletes lives.
